The Centre Inria de l'Université de Grenoble groups together almost 600 people in 22 research teams and 7 research support departments.

The Centre Inria de l'Université Grenoble Alpe is active in the fields of high-performance computing, verification and embedded systems, modeling of the environment at multiple levels, and data science and artificial intelligence. The center is a top-level scientific institute with an extensive network of international collaborations in Europe and the rest of the world.

Contexte et atouts du poste

This offer fits within the framework of our ANR project MatAIRialS, coordinated by Inria, in collaboration with Laboratoire Navier (ENPC) and PMMH (ESPCI-CNRS-Sorbonne Université). MatAIRialS aims at developing novel algorithms to design free-form inflatable shells which are easy to fabricate and able to carry external loadings. To achieve this goal, we are working with novel inflatable meta-materials (i.e. architectured material), consisting of superimposed planar membranes sealed according to regularly repeated parametric patterns to form a periodic padding once inflated. By tiling these patterns on our inflatables and adjusting their parameters we are able to locally modulate the geometric and mechanical properties of the structures and in turn to control their final shapes [1,2].

Within the scope of this postdoc position we want to better characterize the mechanical properties of our architected materials through numerical and/or theorical approaches and develop novel applications for our inflatable structures.

The postdoc will take place at the Inria center of Université Grenoble Alpes, in the CRAFT team, specialized in computational design and digital fabrication, in tight collaboration with ENPC. Frequent travels between the two teams are planned.

Mission confiée

Our achievements in [1] and [2] concerned the programming of the shapes of the structures using inflatable architected materials, but we didn't characterize the mechanics of the used inflatable tiles. One of the goals of this postdoc position is to numerically characterize the mechanical behavior of our inflatable material families, using e.g. homogenization techiques [3,4] and that of the deployed structures. Another is to develop new design tools and/or applications that leverage our novel multilayer inflatable structures. We are particularly interested in applications related to architecture and civil engineering.
